Day 273-RS Open House

The CHL has this great display of the history of the Relief Society and they had a few open houses. Since I work there, I took advantage of it and took a look around. Pretty cool.

Day 272-Fringe

As in bangs!! It's been about 13 years since I last had true bangs! It's a little different, but I think I'm going to like them.

Day 270-New Employee Orientation

I always forget my camera when I do cool things.

Today at work was our new employee orientation, which was interesting because I have worked there for a month! I was not looking forward to it because it was going to be all day, and sounded really boring, but it actually was pretty cool! We went on a tour of the library and got to go into the vaults. They have one vault that is kept at 55 degrees and another at -4 degrees! Brrr! Then we went into the Audio/Visual preservation lab. We got to hear a recording from the late 1800s of Wilford Woodruff when he was 91 years old! And we watched footage from 1916 of President Joseph F. Smith, and other high profile people. And a clip of when President Monson became a member of the 12 in 1963. Later on in the orientation we went up to the document preservation lab and they talked to us about what they do to preserve the documents and the correct way to handle any original documents we might use. After lunch we went to the Church History Museum and got to take a tour of their behind the scenes places. The coolest was their preservation lab (lots of preserving going on). There was a dress that they were preparing to go to BYU for an exhibit in Special Collections. It was an English woman's wedding dress. A couple of years after she got married, they were baptized and emigrated to America and she brought the dress along. She and her family were members of the Willie handcart company, and she brought her dress along with her then too! Then there was a silk apron with beautiful embroidery on it. Apparently, Queen Victoria made it!! QUEEN VICTORIA!! How cool is that?! I so wanted to touch it.

These artifacts are so cool because they are like bridges between the past and the future. A little bit of history still living in our day. Amazing.

Day 269-My Banned Book

For my banned book this year I am reading The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger.

Day 267-Acting

I had my first acting class today. I was a little worried about it, but it ended up being kind of fun We just did some improv games, which usually would make me feel stupid, but the fact that everyone else was there and wholeheartedly participating made them fun. Do you remember being a kid a playing house or making up a game with your friends? It was a bit like that.

I was a bit tired after the class because you just have to be on the entire time. I'm hoping I continue to have a good time for the next five weeks.

Day 266-A Win!

It doesn't quite make up for that disappointing loss last week, but at least it's starting to look like it won't be a horrible season.

Day 263-USA

Day 260-Fall is On It's Way

Yesterday it rained for the first time in a long time and now it is started to feel like fall. Because of that, it was getting to be a perfect time to make some soup. And it is a good way to use up some of that extra zucchini. Find the recipe here; I added some spinach and sprinkled grated parmesan on top.

Day 259-Rainbow Connection

Obviously this picture is a fake, but there was a
rainbow behind the temple today.

What is it about rainbows that makes them so special? No matter how many times you see one, they still make you stop and look, maybe take a picture. They never change: the colors are always in the same order, they are always in the same shape--but there is something about a rainbow that speaks to us.

Maybe it's like our souls just know that there is a message there, and while our mortal selves may not know exactly what that message is, we realize something special and it makes us stop and look. Before we smile on our ways.

Day 258-Work Tailgate Party

We had a tailgate party at work for lunch today to celebrate the upcoming UofU/BYU game.

They had blue and red arrows to show us the way:
The line of people waiting for the free pizza and, if you look closely you can see the truck that served as our "tailgate":
They had a football kicking contest:
The only BYU grad to get a goal (the Utes had this great girl on their team):

Day 255-The Tale of the Homicidal Shoes

I bought a new pair of shoes on Saturday. Platform pumps. Nude.

They are possessed.

They kept trying to sneakily slip off my feet while I was walking to make me trip. And as I was walking down the stairs today, they flew off the stairs, causing me to bump down a stair:
Then I had to catch myself, almost yanking my arm out of it's socket.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they are going back.

Day 254-Do You Remember?

I can't believe that it has been 10 years.

I was thirteen. Had just started eighth grade. It was probably about 7 o'clock in the morning when my mom came home from driving "the kids" to the high school. (We always referred to my older brother and sister as "the kids.") She came inside and turned on the TV in her bedroom. "Chelsy [a neighbor girl] said that a plane crashed into a building in New York," she said.

I stood in the doorway of her room, watching the video footage. "How can a plane just not see a building like that?" I asked. Then another plane hit the second tower. Then the towers collapsed.

By the time school started we had gotten the news of a third plane hitting the Pentagon in Washington, and just a few minutes later a fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania.

It was obvious that these were no accidents, but I didn't really understand what was happening. I remember being confused. What was happening? Then the death count started coming in. And for days, weeks, afterwards those images were shown over and over again. I don't think I will ever forget what it looked like. The aftermath was terrifying. IS terrifying--we're still living in it. The nation mourned and prayed together.

I don't any of us that lived it will ever forget.

Day 251-New Dress!

I LOVE this website! I go on all the time and just look at the dresses and wish that I could buy them. Well, finally I found a dress that I liked that was 1) in my price range, and 2) long enough. I bought it and it just arrived today:
I looks FANTASTIC on me, if I do say so myself.

Now can someone tell me how to accessorize it?

Day 247-Sunday

I wish I could say that my Sunday was this full of grass and top hats. But alas, it was a regular Sunday of church and reading a book.
